Chase the Dragon. 2006
Recycled steel. Dimensions: H=2550mm x W=1473mm x D=1473mm
Photo: Greg Ackland
‘Chase the Dragon’ is a 2.5 metre steel sculpture made in response to the historical gold mining town of Bendigo in Victoria.
The work carries historical, cultural and social references and is a statement about Gold Lust and its effect on Human Behaviour.
This work is concerned with Chinese Heritage in a Western Culture. Bendigo has the largest parading Dragon outside of China.
The materials used in this work carry their own culture, underwriting the concepts behind the work.
The head of the Dragon is made from a 90kg mining drill head. The scales that adorn the spine are made from old farming plough sheers.
The circular elements of the tiered base are made from antique wagon wheel rims.
The tiered base has been designed to hold hundreds of Chinese Joss sticks, these bring to the work elements of Celebration, Sacredness and Ceremony.
The title of the work ‘Chase the Dragon’ hints at the lust that causes a city to undermine itself in its search for fortune and gold.
The title also references the introduction of Opium into the colony along with the ramifications of this event in contemporary Australian society.
Made for the ‘Double Vision’ artist exchange program between The City Of Onkaparinga and The Greater City Of Bendigo,
‘Chase The Dragon’ is currently sited on View Street in Bendigo Victoria.
